I’m looking to purchase a new one any comments on which one to buy ?
I’ve used a couple of Bushnells, and for the last few years, the Nikon Archers Choice. My advice is first, stay away from the lower price point rangefinders ($100~$200 range). Be prepared to spend around $250 and up. Make sure you get Angle Compensation. Bushnell calls it A.R.C., Nikon calls it Incline/Decline–either way it is a must-have IMHO. Finally get a “waterproof” rangefinder–not “water-resistant” or “rainproof”. A couple years ago, I spent around $250 for a rangefinder, and on my first hunt, my camelbak bladder leaked on it and fried it.
I mostly like the Archers Choice, but have found it won’t range when you are in a cloud or fog (I hunt at high elevation where being in a cloud is common). What I don’t like about the AC is that it is limited to around 100yds range. I wish I had bought the Nikon 550 instead. Sometimes it is handy to shoot a range to a landmark that is a ways out, and the 550 will range accurately out to 550 yards. It has the ID technology, and while intended for rifle hunters, works just as well for archery. Both come with a slick neoprene case that I love. The Archers Choice Max looks very promising too.
I was messing around with Dixon’s NIkon Archer’s Choice Max. I was ranging out to 280. NEEEEEEEED one
I would say the nikon rifle hunter. It has the angle compensation and you can range further, the archers choice is good but i like to have the extra range just because. when I spot an animal i can range it and range objects around it then Ill know when i get to that object about how close ill be to the target.
IMO, the Nikon Archer’s Choise Max and the Rifle Hunter 550 are the ONLY OPTIONS.
I love my Nikon Archer’s Choice Max. I have gone in the high 270 plus yard readings with it.
I had a bushnell and it was ok but I wanted something better and I bought a leupold. Unfortunately its not any better then the bushnell at reading out past a 100 yards. I would only buy a nikon if was going to replace this one. Nikons are the only ones that will read through the mesh of my double bull. As far as I know nikon is also the only one that makes waterproof models, not just water resistant.
I have great success with the Nikon Archer’s Choice Max and the Opti-Logic Micro which I have been using exclusevily for the past 3 months and no complaints! http://goo.gl/HIHiI
Love my Nikon RIfle Hunter 550. Has yet to let me down. I do plan on taking a look at the new vortex range finder. Anyone got to hold one of those yet??
I was informed last week that Brunton has a new rangefinder in the works. Pretty stoked to get my hands on that. Their optics are sick!
kjw01 – Ping Dan Staton, he uses Vortex products and seemed impressed with the Rangefinder
I think I have narrowed down my search to the Nikon AC Max or the Rifle Hunter 550.
