As I sat there staring out from my set up, all I could think about was how big of a buck my 12 year old daughter was going to Rayannget. The cold temperatures were no longer affecting me or her. We just had one come by at close range, but offered no shot. We were endlessly going to wait until another came by. We were in a good spot. My New York friend, who is a lifelong whitetail hunter, told me the one who waits the longest wins.

This year was going to be a big year for me. My daughter, who is 12, could officially hunt big game. She had hunted for turkeys for 3 seasons, and was succesfull all three years, so I knew she could hunt. I have always hunted mule deer, so to change it up, I got her a whitetail tag thinking it would be fun to go out in November and hunt. I had some good land to hunt, and knew where some deer were, so out we went. I had not scouted the area so we were going to have to look around a little first. We found some great trails, so we set up on one. Rayann, my daughter, was shooting a muzzle loader, so the shot was going to have to be less than 70 yards. As we started to sit, I was thinking, wow I don’t know if I have this whitetail hunting in me. To sit for hours on end is not in my DNA, but for the sake of Rayann, I waited. She sat there staring out not a word spoken, and perfectly content. So I sat likewise. Then it happened. I had my head leaned back, and eyes closed in boredom. I picked it up looked to my left and saw her, a doe at 25 yards. She walked by us and gave Rayann a perfect shot at 20 yards. She put the gun on it, and followed it until it walked out of sight. She wanted a buck. She looked at me with a huge grin. As we started to settle in for another wait, I caught movement. There to my left, 50 yards past where the doe walked through, was a beautiful 4×4 with eyegaurds, or as the pros say 10 point. I started breathing hard, and I wasn’t the shooter. That buck never presented a shot for Rayann, but it shot me in the guts with whitetail madness. We went nuts. We hunted for nine straight days. Blowing off work and school like it was the last days to be alive. We rattled with great success, found scrape lines, and trails. Found bedding areas, and feeding areas. We saw huge bucks, small bucks, does, fawns. We studied there every habit trying to learn something from them that would give us the edge. Rayann ended up getting a buck, but it was not the end, it was the beginning. I am completly addicted. I have plans for next year already. See I can hunt these deer with my bow in November. I have tree stand spots already chosen. Now when I close my eyes I see whitetails.
